An holistic view of psychotherapy

Gestalt therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach developed in the 1940s by Fritz Perls, Laura Perls, and Paul Goodman. It arose as a reaction to the limitations of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic therapy and is based on the insight that human beings can best be understood as whole entities, rather than as the sum of separate parts.

This holistic approach emphasizes the here and now, focusing on present experience and awareness.

Basic principles

Gestalt Therapy is based on several key principles:

1. Awareness

The main goal is to increase the individual's awareness of his or her thoughts, emotions, and actions in the present moment. Awareness allows patients to recognize patterns of behavior and feelings that may be hindering their personal growth.

2. Here and now

Rather than focusing on the past, Gestalt Therapy places emphasis on current experience. Patients are encouraged to explore and experience their emotions in the present, which facilitates a deeper understanding of their emotional reality.

3. Responsibility

Individuals are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions. Gestalt Therapy helps patients recognize and accept their ability to influence their own life and well-being.

Applications and benefits

Gestalt Therapy can be applied to a variety of emotional and psychological problems:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Relationship issues
  • Personality dissorder
  • Stress and anger management

Benefits include increased self-understanding, improved emotional management, and a sense of personal empowerment.
