Personality enneagram

The Enneagram of Personality is a powerful and complex tool that describes nine distinct personality types and their interrelationships. This system helps us understand our behavioral patterns, deep motivations, and ways of interacting with the world.

Each of the nine types has its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, and the Enneagram offers a framework for understanding and working with these aspects of yourself.

Claudio Naranjo and the Enneagram

Claudio Naranjo, a Chilean psychiatrist and psychotherapist, is one of the most influential figures in the development and dissemination of the modern Enneagram. Naranjo studied with Oscar Ichazo, who was one of the first to teach the Enneagram in its contemporary form. Claudio Naranjo took the Enneagram further, integrating it with his deep knowledge of psychology, spirituality, and therapy.

Personality types

One of Claudio Naranjo's great contributions was his focus on the therapeutic applications of the Enneagram. He identified the ways in which each personality type can develop patterns of behavior and thought that result in suffering and limitation. In addition, he proposed specific strategies for personal transformation and growth:

  • Type 1: The Reformer – Naranjo worked with individuals of this type to help them balance their strong sense of duty with a greater acceptance of themselves and others.
  • Type 2: The Helper – In this case, therapy focuses on fostering self-nurturing and recognition of one’s own needs.
  • Type 3: The Achiever – Naranjo helped these individuals find a balance between their desire for success and personal authenticity.
  • Type 4: The Individualist – Here, therapy seeks to balance intense emotional life with stability and objectivity.
  • Type 5: The Investigator – Naranjo guided these individuals to connect more deeply with their emotions and to open up more to others.
  • Type 6: The Loyalist – Therapy focused on building trust and reducing anxiety through self-affirmation.
  • Type 7: The Enthusiast – Naranjo worked to help these individuals find emotional depth beyond the constant search for stimulation.
  • Type 8: The Challenger – Therapy was aimed at balancing their need for control with vulnerability and empathy.
  • Type 9: The Peacemaker – Orange helped these individuals assert their own needs and desires, rather than avoiding conflict at all costs.

Modern applications

Today, the Enneagram is used in a variety of contexts, from individual therapy to organizational development. It has become a valuable tool for coaches and consultants seeking to improve team dynamics and communication in the workplace. It is also used by educators to better understand their students and adapt their teaching methods.
